NGOS IDENTIFYING PRIORITY ENVIRONMENTAL PROBLEMS
was the main subject of a two day national conference called "Environment in Azerbaijan as viewed by NGOs", organized on the initiative of the NGO-Forum and sponsored by the UNDP NGO Resource and Training Center in Azerbaijan took place in Baku in December, 2000. Local NGOs have conducted a number of public polls and scientific researches in advance to identify priority environmental problems of Azerbaijan. Public polls witnessed that the population of Azerbaijan are very well familiar with environmental problems. The Azerbaijani people are very much concerned with negative health impact caused by environmental pollution. The public polls also revealed that "environmental consciousness" is on zero level in Azerbaijan. 12 % of all respondents among scholars have no idea of limited natural resources and their sustainable development. In addition, the Azerbaijani NGOs took initiative to develop national environmental programme.
