A new phase in the protection of Angolan biodiversity: the new NBSAP
Angola has marked a new phase in the protection of its natural heritage with the approval of the National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan (NBSAP). The first step in developing this document was a series of studies to investigate the state of the country’s biodiversity on land and in the sea, what laws protect it, and how communities have been using it. Most people have heard of the Black Giant Sable, but this emblematic antelope is but one example of the incredibly rich biodiversity Angola possesses—thanks to the country’s vast dimensions, its inter-tropical geographic position, and a wide range of altitudes and biomes.

After a series of public consultation workshops that led to the final NBSAP, last year the Council of Ministers approved the document that sets out the vision and concrete actions to protect the country’s biodiversity for the period 2007-2012. You can download the document from the library, in both Portuguese and English. If want to know more, you can reach the Ministry of Urbanism and Environment at  minua@snet.co.ao
