DLIST Node Moderators meet in Cape Town
By Isabel Nosipho, Port Nolloth DLIST Node

On the 30th of July 2007 a DLIST workshop was held in Cape Town for DLIST node moderators from Port Nolloth, Cape Town, Lüderitz, Walvis Bay and Henties Bay. The objective of the workshop was to give a proper introduction to DLIST and to gain a clear understanding of what a node is.

The workshop started with an informal introduction of ourselves and the areas we are operating from, followed by the activities that were currently taking place at the different nodes. This was very interesting because the participants came from different backgrounds and were working on a spectrum of topics like research on mushroom farming, community upliftment projects, research on indigenous knowledge etc.

The main part of the workshop was to come up with ideas of how we can expose and improve DLIST’s outreach. Ideas came up of putting some of the discussions on notice boards, being visible at events, getting involved with existing forums and even starting an Ecoclub. We also discussed the possibility of making the Environmental Engineering course accessible to matriculated students who are not able to further their studies. Not only will the course empower more of the disadvantaged youngsters, but will also increase the participation on the website. Since the youth was one of our main focuses, we agreed to obtain information on sources of funding for students in the RSA and Namibia.

Finally we took a look at DLIST’s successes and the targets we have been able to reach through the years up to 2007. There is a very impressive percentage of people who log on to the website, download the course material and who receive the DLIST newsletter.

The workshop was indeed a great way for us to meet and communicate. At the end each one of us was properly informed of one another’s role at the different DLIST nodes and had more ideas of what we need to do to get the people in our communities talking and sharing information. The workshop was very informative and I hope my fellow colleagues enjoyed it as much as I did!
