Helsinki, 10 November (HELCOM) - The Helsinki Commission today released a popular brochure on the draft concept of the Baltic Sea Action Plan, now being developed by HELCOM, in order to promote public awareness and wide stakeholder participation in the process of drawing up and adopting the plan.

The decision to create a new innovative environmental strategy for the Baltic Sea was taken by the HELCOM Member States and the EU at a meeting held in June 2005. Its main aim is to ensure that all possible measures are taken to reduce pollution in the Baltic Sea and to repair the damage done to the marine environment. It is expected that the action plan will be adopted by 2007.

The popular brochure explains the aims of the Baltic Sea Action Plan, the basis on which it will be developed, and the role of HELCOM. The publication also describes key environmental issues that need to be addressed and provides details on the objectives and concrete actions to be undertaken.

The PDF version of the brochure can be viewed on the Commission’s website at http://helcom.navigo.fi/stc/files/Publications/BalticSeaActionPlan/Baltic_Sea_Action_Plan_brochure.pdf.
