The Danube Regional Project funded by the Global Environmental Facility
(GEF/ UNDP) has started its Grants Programme to support non-governmental
organisation projects related to the reduction of nutrient and toxic chemicals
      in the Danube Basin.
The Regional Environmental Center for Central and Eastern Europe (REC) is
responsible for the technical process and announced the call for proposals
to support non-governmental organisation (NGO) projects in the beginning
of April. All projects have to be related to the reduction of nutrients
and toxic chemicals pollution in the following Danube Basin Countries: Bosnia
Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Hungary, Moldova, Romania,
Serbia and Montenegro, Slovakia, Slovenia, and Ukraine.
The Grants Programme is split in two parts, the regional grants and the
      national grants.
National grants: The total value of grants per country varies between US$40,000-60,000.
Individual national grants are from US$5,000-10,000 each for a project period
of 12 months. In exceptional cases, the amount can exceed this limit by
50 percent (i.e. up to US$15,000). The deadline for submitting concept papers
for the national grant is May 16, 2003.
Regional grants: Regional grants are up to US$35,000 each. In exceptional
cases, the amount can exceed this limit by 50 percent (i.e. up to US$50,000).
The deadline for submitting concept papers for the regional grant is May
      9, 2003.
Selected concept papers have than be developed to Full Project Proposals,
which will be evaluated in September 2003. The awarded projects should be
      implemented by NGOs in 2004.
