NEW MAIN SEWAGE TREATMENT
PLANT IN VIENNA Vienna’s
main sewage treatment plant opened on June 18. This plant purifies
90% of the city’s wastewater, over 500,000m3 on a dry
day. Wastewater takes 20 hours to pass through the mechanical
and biological purification stages before it can be discharged
into the Danube. This expansion of the sewage treatment plant,
begun in 2000, confirms the city’s reputation for high
environmental standards.

COCA-COLA
AND ICPDR FORM DANUBE PARTNERSHIP
In June ICPDR and Coca-Cola (Coca-Cola HBC and
Coca-Cola Company) formed a partnership to support local citizens
and spur them into action on behalf of their rivers. National
project teams have been set up so far in Serbia and Montenegro,
Hungary, Slovakia, Romania and Bulgaria, many of which contributed
fruitful programmes to Danube Day.

UPGRADE
FOR HUNGARY’S LARGEST OIL REFINERY
Work has finished on a €40 million expansion
and upgrade of the wastewater treatment facilities at the Duna
Refinery of Hungarian Oil and Gas Company (MOL), located in
Szazhalombatta near Budapest. Designed and built by Earth Tech,
the upgrades bring the refinery into compliance with EU and
Hungarian environmental regulations. Emission reductions from
the 24,000m3/day treatment plant will significantly benefit
downstream water resources.

TWO NEW HYDROELECTRIC
PLANTS ON VRBAS RIVER
Bosnia and Herzegovina announced plans to construct two hydroelectric
power plants in the upper course of the Vrbas River near Banja
Luka. The
plan also includes relocating a section of the main road M-16.
Expenses for
construction and relocation are estimated at €165 million.
Local ecologists
oppose the project, which is situated in an area that has been
protected for
the last half-century.

NEW MANUAL ON DANUBE NAVIGATION
An updated Manual on Danube Navigation is available from via donau,
the Austrian agency for the Danube waterway. This reference book
includes
information on the navigation sector on the Danube, River Information
Services, cost management, price policy and legal aspects. This
release
follows the Manual on Danube Ports (2003), a description of the
ports
along the navigable stretch of the river. Both publications are
available in
German and English from via donau.

For the last four years, Ursula Schmedtje has worked as Technical
Expert
for River Basin Management for the ICPDR Secretariat and has
supported the Danube countries in implementing the EU Water Framework
