BRIDGE IN
NOVI SAD RE-OPENED
More than fi ve years after the destruction of the bridges on
the Danube at Novi Sad, the Danube is fully navigable again. The
river bottom has been cleared, the wrecks removed and the bridges
reconstructed. The last bridge to be rebuilt was opened in October
by the Authorities of the City of Novi Sad. Two barges of the
pontoon bridge have been opened to allow the passage of vessels
and the rest of the pontoons will be completely removed later.

NEW
LABORATORY FOR KRIS WATER DIRECTORATE
On November 9, the official opening of the laboratory
of the water directorate
Kris took place in Oradea, Romania, in the presence of Romanian
State
Secretary Lucia Varga and Philip Weller, ICPDR Executive Secretary.
The
equipment of the laboratory was donated by the Alcoa Foundation
under the
framework of their Danube Support Programme. The equipment will
enhance
the participation in the Transnational Monitoring Network. |

NEW
ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT ASSESSMENT ORDERED
Further work on the Bystroe navigation canal has
stopped, awaiting a revised
environmental impact assessment of the project's proposed
second phase.
Ordered by the Ministry of Environment, the report should be
completed
March 2006. Ukraine reiterated its commitment to share the report
with the
public and hold a formal legal process on the results before
work begins.
ICPDR sent a presidential visit to Ukraine in September and
is discussing
plans with Ukraine, Romania and other international partners
for a conference
on sustainable development in the Danube Delta in 2006. |

DANUBE-BLACK SEA STRATEGIC
PARTNERSHIP
An important milestone has been reached in the Danube-Black
Sea Strategic
Partnership in the form of a progress report submitted to the
GEF Council
in November. The interim report reviews the activities and achievements
of
the six year Danube-Black Sea Strategic Partnership. The
Partnership includes
the activities of the Danube Regional Project, the Black Sea Ecosystem
Recovery Project, and the World Bank Partnership Investment Fund.
The
report presents improvements achieved or expected within the basin.

VIENNA, AUSTRIA
INLAND NAVIGATION CONGRESS
Organised in the framework of the Austrian EU Presidency, the
central
theme will be the EC communication, An Integrated European Action
Programme for Inland Waterway Transport. To prepare for the High
Level
Meeting, an industry congress for the shipping industry will be
held on
February 14. Focus will be on measures of the EC communication
from
the point of view of the shipping industry. The high-level meeting
will
define the next steps for the implementation of the EC communication
at community level.

NEW PUBLICATION ON DANUBE ISSUES
The Danube Environmental Forum (DEF), the largest network of environmental
NGOs in the Danube Basin, has issued a new publication,
Danube and Us. The booklet presents information about the Danube
and
it waters, touching on a diverse set of issues from agriculture
to mining
and navigation. The booklet is currently available in English,
but will be
translated into several national languages of the Basin soon.

BIRGIT AND ANNA!
Two new colleagues have joined the ICPDR Secretariat: As the new
Finance Officer, Anna Koch ensures the professional handling of
all
financial matters. Birgit Vogel is the new Technical Expert for
River
Basin Management and will accompany the ICPDR experts throughout
the Danube River Basin in further implementation of the EU Water
Framework Directive. |
