13.6 MITIGATION OF IMPACTS
Because major dams have significant impacts on the natural processes within
the river systems and their fish communities, mitigation measures are
needed to allow the various species of fish to continue to survive and
the fishery to flourish. One approach to this, as mentioned above, is
the allocation of sufficient downstream flows to preserve ecosystem functioning.
Other methods for mitigating the effects of dams are discussed in Section
11.
