The People’s Highway: Past Present and Future Transport on the Mekong River System

The Mekong River has always been a working river. Through centuries people and goods have moved along this wide brown highway that preceded roads. Today there is increased discussion of the Mekong as an inland waterway corridor linking the region. The discussion in this report aims to provide some context to the broader current public discussion of the current issues relating to navigation and its potential to improve livelihoods for some of the poorest people of this region.
