Article: Out of Mexico? Scientists Ponder Influenza A H1N1 Origins

"I'm amazed at the capacity we have with the information and communication technologies," says epidemiologist Mirta Roses Periago, head of the Pan American Health Organization. "We used to do things with our hands and smelling and looking at the patients." During the past few weeks, she notes, scientists have rapidly shared sequences of the viruses, digital images of patient x-rays, and electron micrographs of the new H1N1.

"At this point in history, this is the best surveillance we've ever had," said Keiji Fukuda, one of WHO's assistant director generals.

The WHO Timeline of Influenza A(H1N1)Cases - Interactive Map is published at the WHO Influenza Portal and is also disseminate by the PandemicFlu.gov Web site.

This interactive world map shows the cumulative spread of new influenza A(H1N1) cases as they were reported to WHO beginning 26 April 2009. These numbers relate to laboratory confirmed cases and deaths.

Mexico was struck worse than any other country that were affected by A H1N1 flu, but because of a strong national preparedness plan and the quick decision made by the mexican authorities after this new virus was identified the outbreak was prevented from spreading unchecked.

Addressing a special session of the Permanent Council of the Organization of American States (OAS) in Washington, the Director of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), Dr. Mirta Roses, said that much more information is needed to gauge the threat presented by the new H1N1 influenza virus. Nevertheless, she said, the countries of the Americas are better prepared today than in the past.

19 May 2009.- WHO Director-General Dr Margaret Chan and United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon today met with over 30 vaccine manufacturers from developing and developed countries. Industry representatives affirmed their cooperation in making vaccine supplies available to developing countries.

Global Public Health response to the alert for A/H1N1 Influenza Virus

WHO is coordinating the global response to human cases of swine influenza A (H1N1) and monitoring the corresponding threat of an influenza pandemic.

The World Health Organization has been giving a regular meeting with the press on a daily basis since last 26 April 2009. The need for information to all levels of our society is an important fact and WHO is looking to help fill that gap by providing updated information about the current situation and the actions that have should be taken to protect the health of the people all around the world supporting the countries on strengthening their defenses to be better prepared to respond under a situation of pandemic influenza.

PAHO Press Conferences on Influenza A(H1N1) have been taken place at PAHO HQ since Sunday, May 3 2009, by Dr. Jon Andrus, PAHO's Senior Technical Advisor in Immunizations.

During the first week Dr. Mirta Roses, PAHO's Director and Dr. Socorro Gross, PAHO's Assistant Director, were also attended the conferences to support any public health policies issues that were discussing during the questions and answers section.
