The Baltic Sea has a great significance in the Lithuanian society. Most national resorts are located on the Baltic Sea shore. The Baltic Sea has great industrial value (Klaipeda State Seaport with the infrastructure of transportation, Butinge Oil Terminal and fishery) as well as environmental and cultural value.

The Curonian Spit National Park was established to preserve the landscape and ethnocultural heritage of the Lithuanian coastal area along with the sand dunes, which are unique in Europe. In 2000 this national park, as cultural landscape, was inscribed into the World Heritage List.
