IMO approves seabed carbon storage

masthead.JPG2201, 09/11/06

Parties to the London convention on dumping of waste at sea have approved sub-seabed storage of carbon dioxide at a meeting of the International maritime organisation.  The rule change will take effect on 10 February next year.  Proponents of the technology including the EU's carbon capture task force have identified legislative barriers as a key obstacle to CCS (EED 13/09/06 http://www.endseuropedaily.com/21621).

Several international bodies and the European commission are currently drafting rules to give it a more stable regulatory basis.  See press release http://www.imo.org/Newsroom/mainframe.asp?topic_id=1320&doc_id=7301.
