EU targets citizens in climate change campaign

masthead.JPG2105, 29/05/06

The European commission has launched the first EU publicity campaign on climate change, telling citizens: "you control climate change". The E4.7m drive will see national campaigns launched in all 25 EU capitals to raise awareness and change behaviour.  A website offers tips to encourage the public to "turn down, switch off, recycle and walk".

Launching the campaign on Monday, commission president Jose Manuel Barroso denied NGO accusations of his personal behaviour: "We don't have a moralist agenda - we can recommend certain actions and leave it to citizens to decide."
