IMO takes step towards ship recycling law

Environment Daily 1923, 27/07/05

A committee of UN shipping and oceans agency the International maritime organisation (IMO) last week called for new legally binding measures on ship recycling.  A resolution adopted by the organisation's environment committee (MEPC) calls for development of measures covering the whole life cycle of ships, environmentally sound recycling facilities, and "an appropriate enforcement mechanism".  The measures should be completed by 2007 and adopted in 2008 or 2009.

The committee also agreed to designate the Baltic sea a particularly sensitive sea area.
