MRC Secretariat Announces New CEO

MRC No. 02/08
Vientiane, Lao PDR
13 February, 2008

The Mekong River Commission (MRC) has appointed Jeremy Bird, a specialist in water resources management from the UK, as new Chief Executive Officer for its Secretariat, based in Vientiane.

Mr Bird, a Chartered Engineer with postgraduate qualification in water law and policy, has over 25 years of international experience in the water sector. He was appointed to the post by the MRC Ministerial Council after being selected by the organisation’s Joint Committee. Both bodies are comprised of senior representatives from the four MRC Member States: Cambodia, the Lao PDR, Thailand and Viet Nam.

Already familiar with the Lower Mekong Basin region, Mr Bird will bring to the MRC sound knowledge on the utilisation of international waters, and a good understanding of development issues related to hydropower projects, environmental and social assessment, flood management, and irrigation. He begins his three-year term on 29 March before the next MRC Joint Committee meeting in Danang, Viet Nam.
