The satellite image provides a detailed view of the main Angkor Temple, which is characterized by its rectangular shape and geometric outlines of the main buildings and pathways. The Ankor Wat temple is one of the most impressive and largest ceremonial buildings in all of Asia. In 1992, the United Nations had designated the Ankor area as a World Heritage Site. The recent attraction of numerous tourists, as evidenced by a considerable construction boom, especially in and around the neighboring town of Siem Reap.
The full image shows an overview of the temple district and its environmental setting. Aside from the temples, the predominant land cover is agricultural fields, settlements and forests. The main perimeter is formed by a wide water-filled moat. Access to the island is provided by two bridges on the eastern and western side, leading to the central temple structure of equally rectangular shape.
