UNEP Activities in Environmental Assessment

UNEP’s strategic approach is to undertake and support timely, participatory and scientifically credible environmental assessments that are legitimate and relevant to decision-making processes, based on best available scientific expertise, knowledge, data and indicators.

Environmental assessments are key vehicles for promoting the interaction between science processes and the various stages of the policy and decision-making cycle. They underpin decision-making by UNEP’s Governing Council, multilateral environmental agreements, regional ministerial environmental forums, the private sector and national and local authorities.
