The CCRES project’s roadshow of events to showcase its innovative, new tools and resources arrived in Indonesia during late July.
At the project’s pilot site in Indonesia, Selayar, in South Sulawesi, local environmental planners, coastal managers, tourism officers, business officials and community leaders attended a Tools Forum to see demonstrations and make plans to use technical products that have been developed based on research by CCRES scientists.
These products include frameworks, models and software that will help users design marine reserves, prepare marine spatial plans, map socio-ecological systems, simulate future scenarios, analyse business value chains, develop sustainable eco-businesses, strengthen institutional governance and promote positive environmental behaviours.
The event was formally opened by the Secretary of the Regency of Selayar, Dr Marjani Sultan, and moderated by Professor Jamal Jompa from our provincial science partner Hasanuddin University (UnHas). In a symbolic ceremony to mark the event, the CCRES team was invited by Dr Marjani to join him and local government officials to release baby turtles at Kampung Penyu in Desa Barugaiya, Bontomanai.
A few days later a Stakeholder Showcase involving provincial, national and regional stakeholders, including representatives from our partners in Indonesia, the Ministry for Marine Affairs and Fisheries (MMAF), the Indonesian Institute for Sciences (LIPI), Bogor Agricultural University’s Center for Coastal and Marine Resource Studies (CCMRS), UnHas, and the DINAS Marine and Fisheries, Selayar, was held in Jakarta.
Guest speakers were Pak Andi Rusandi, Director of Marine Conservation and Biodiversity , MMAF, and the Bupati of Selayar, Pak Muhammad Basli Ali. We are grateful to Dr Luky Adrianto from IPB-Bogor for moderating the opening proceedings.
As a result of the events, the CCRES project has received invitations to conduct tools training workshops for planners and policymakers from several organisations and support the use of tools during the development of projects, policies and plans for strengthening coastal governance in Indonesia and across Southeast Asia.
