SUSTAINABLE INTEGRATED WATER RESOURCES AND WASTEWATER MANAGEMENT PROJECT IN PACIFIC ISLAND COUNTRIES
Gef IWRM1

Welcome to the Integrated Water Resources Management Project

The Global Environmental Facility (GEF) through the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) signed an agreement with SOPAC to develop an innovative programme on Sustainable Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) in the Pacific. The project will be developed by UNDP, United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and SOPAC through the Pacific Water Partnership.

The aim of the regional project is to assist Pacific Island Countries to implement applicable and effective Integrated Water Resource Management and Water Use Efficiency (WUE) plans based on best practices and demonstrations. It will support the implementation of the Pacific Regional Action Plan on Sustainable Water Management that aims to improve the assessment and monitoring of water resources, reduce water pollution, improve access to technologies, strengthen institutional agreements, and leverage additional financial resources in supporting IWRM.

We are currently in the Project Development Facility (PDF) -B phase of the process for the next two years, which will have as a main objective the development of a full size GEF project including activities such as the identification of national IWRM focal points, consultations and formulating the design of in-country demonstration projects.

A proposal has also been submitted to the EU Water Facility to complement the GEF-funded Pacific IWRM Demonstration Project and this regional project would support the development of national IWRM and Water Use Efficiency plans through the establishment of a regional IWRM Resource Centre and support of in-country national consultations.

We acknowledge the support provided by the GEF for introducing and implementing IWRM in the Pacific as well as our project partners UNDP and UNEP.
