EU marine framework directive to enter force

A new marine framework directive is to enter force after EU finance ministers gave their formal approval to the law on Wednesday, based on an agreement struck with the European parliament in November (EED 03/12/07 http://www.endseuropedaily.com/24414). 

MEPs approved the deal in December (EED 11/12/07 http://www.endseuropedaily.com/24474).  The directive will now be published in the EU's official journal.  The law requires member states to take measures to ensure the "good environmental status" of all EU seas from 2020.
