2007 "likely to be world's warmest year"

Britain's meteorological service has predicted that 2007 will likely be the warmest year on record globally.  On Thursday, the Met Office forecast a mean global temperature of 14.54 degrees Celsius.  This would break the previous record of 14.52 degrees set in 1998.

Scientists blame global warming and the El Nino phenomenon for the predicted rise.  The office added that 2006 was probably the sixth warmest year on record.  In recent years, its predictions have proved accurate to within 0.06 degrees.
