EU water policies will not be successful unless they are linked more closely to efforts to tackle climate, the European parliament's special committee on climate change has heard. Addressing the committee on Tuesday, Unep official Kaveh Zahedi said it was now impossible to address scarcity issues "with exclusively water-related policies". "Any sensible water policy for Europe [..] must include combating climate change", he said.
Committee rapporteur Karl Heinz Florenz criticised the poor implementation of existing EU water policy, saying "we already have legislation: enforcement is what is difficult".
