Largest Baltic pollution source tackled

The amount of untreated sewage released to the Baltic Sea from St Petersburg is to be halved with the opening of a major new wastewater treatment plant.  The Russian city is the Baltic's largest single pollution source. 

The €180m plant, officially commissioned last week, was the largest such project in Europe and was completed with funding from 14 different sources.  Neighbouring governments and the Baltic protection commission Helcom welcomed the plant's completion as a significant development in efforts to combat eutrophication in the Baltic Sea.
