Swedes back regional marine institute

A Swedish government commission has urged the creation of a new marine environment institute to formulate strategies for protecting the Baltic and North Seas.  

In a report on Wednesday the panel nominates the University of  Gothenburg to coordinate research into a wide range of "complex problems including eutrophication, dwindling fish stocks and ecotoxins in benthic sediments and food chains".  The institute would aim to influence national and international policy, in line with previous Swedish initiatives urging the EU to tackle marine pollution (EED 11/05/05 http://www.endseuropedaily.com/18764).
