Finland sets out new water protection policy

The Finnish ministry of the environment highlighted eutrophication as the country's most serious water protection issue in a new national water policy published on Thursday.  Agricultural nutrient releases still cause more than half of Finnish eutrophication, the ministry said.  The new programme's key objective is to reduce farmland nutrient sources by a third by 2015 compared to the period 2002-2005.

The policy also states at least 70 per cent of nitrogen must be removed from municipal sewage treatment plants in more densely populated areas.
