Greenpeace calls for massive marine reserves in the North and Baltic Seas

Environment Daily 1705, 19/07/04

Forty per cent of the North and Baltic Seas should be declared marine reserves, environmental group Greenpeace urged last week.

The reserves should be made off-limits to fishing, dredging and mineral exploration, the NGO said, though not necessarily wind energy due to the urgent need to cut greenhouse gas emissions.

Current EU policies "are failing to reverse drastic declines in fish stocks and in populations of other marine species", it added. An "ecosystem-based approach" is needed, involving the establishment of large-scale reserves.
