HELCOM's new animation "Lord of the Things"
HELCOM's new animation "Lord of the Things" aims to increase public awareness of environmental problems in the Baltic
A new web-based video animation, titled “Lord of the Things”, is being launched by the Helsinki Commission to inform the public, especially young people, about environmental protection around the Baltic Sea.
Viewers join Frodovich and Glunkton the Plankton on their exciting journey to deliver the “Thing of Ignorance” back to it origins in the heart of the Baltic Sea – the only place where this evil can be destroyed!
Wrapped in a humorous plot – and borrowing a few ideas from certain well-known literary sources – “Lord of the Things” encourages viewers to set themselves objectives to help make the Baltic Sea clean and healthy.
The innovative eight-minute video animation is part the HELCOM project An Ecosystem Approach to the Management of Human Activities, which aims to make all sectors of society consider their effects on the Baltic marine ecosystems. The project also involves the setting of Ecological Quality Objectives (EcoQOs) – targets that allow us to measure whether we are moving fast enough in the right direction on environmental protection.
“By arousing public interest – especially in the younger generation – we hope that our work here at HELCOM will become more visible”, says Sebastian Valanko, Project Assistant at the Helsinki Commission. “The new video illustrates how the problems behind the well-being of the Baltic Sea can only be resolved if we set ourselves clear objectives and jointly act on them.”
“Setting clear objectives helps to guarantee that progress in environmental protection can be measured against concrete targets,” adds Valanko. “The health of the Baltic marine ecosystem ultimately depends on choices made by society as a whole, and not just politicians or scientists. Targets need to be realistic, and understandable to everyone.”
