In collaboration with International Maritime Organization (IMO) PERSGA is organizing a workshop on "Control of and Response to Chemical Spills in the Coastal and Marine Environment" in its headquarter in Jeddah During the period 20th- 23rd December 2009.
The workshop aims to train about 20 participants from the region on methods employed in chemical spill preparedness, response and control. And build regional capacities to deal with incidents involving chemical spills.
The training program will include several lectures discussing the hazards, properties and spill behaviour of chemicals and their significance in incident response planning. How chemicals are shipped by sea, vessels types, product controls and potential accident scenarios. Combating marine chemical spills – options, techniques, equipment and their limitations. Chemical impacts on the marine environment, aquatic life and coastal resources. The development of a national marine chemical spill response contingency plan. Chemical spill modeling basics and essential data requirements. As well as a demonstration of spill modelling using local hypothetical incidents within the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden.
