The first lecture of this module provides an overview of air pollution issues - the health and environmental impacts and sources - and discusses a system for Air Quality Management. The second lecture is a case study that focusses on vehicle transport as a major source of air pollution in the City of Cape Town.

The module includes a description of the main outdoor (ambient) air pollutants in urban areas and their health impacts, a brief survey of the most common sources of air pollution, an overview of an Emmission Inventory and the basic methods of estimating emmission rates from each of the main categories of air pollutatnt sources, a description of an Air Quality Management System, and a case study : Estimating Vehicle Emmissions in the City of Cape Town.

Learning objectives:

After completing the Air Quality Management module, a student should be able to:

1. Identify the common air pollutants and their main health and environmental impacts;

2. Identify the main sources of air pollution in urban areas;

3. Briefly an air quality management system, including the basic information tools required to establish such a system;

4. Understand and use simple methods of estimating pollutant emission rates from different types of sources; and

5. Use basic air pollution terminology correctly.

The second part of the module is focussed on road transport as a major source of air pollution in large urban areas. Students should acquire an understanding of the factors that contribute to total vehicle emissions, methods used to control and reduce vehicle emissions, and the limitations of emission control methods.

In addition, students should acquire a basic understanding of air pollution meteorology and the relationship between air pollution and Global Warming (Climate Change).
