Supplementary Module: Conservation |
|
The Module on Conservation provides an overview of the theory and practice behind protected areas, using examples from the west coast of Southern Africa. It describes how the concept of conservation has evolved over time, what tools and policies are available for protected areas, and the status of conservation along the BCLME.
Learning objectives
By the end of the course the students should have an overview of:
- what is a protected area and how this concept has evolved over time
- the different purposes for, and categories of protected areas
- conventions and national legislation relevant to conservation
- criteria used for protected area selection
- factors that should be considered in protected area management and monitoring
- the concept of community-based conservation
- the concept of transfrontier protected areas
- the status of conservation worldwide and more specifically along the BCLME
The students are expected to apply the knowledge gained in:
- the analysis of one case study about the Richtersveld Community Conservancy
- the analysis of three newspaper articles
- a self-test
