The first module on "Our coastal areas" provides an overview of the
West Coast of South Africa and Namibia in terms of what is there and
what activities take place along the coast.
The first lecture on
the "General Environment" covers aspects relaing to oceans and currents
and marine and coastal ecosystems, as well as aspects relating to the
history and population of this coast. The second lecture is
dedicated to "Activities" along the coast, such as tourism, mining and
fishing, and their use of resources, while also providing an overview
of the socio-economic lansdcape.
Learning objectives :
By the end of the course the students should have an overview of:
the environmental and socio-economic landscape of the coast of South Africa and Namibia
the inter-relatedness between different coastal and marine ecosystems
the main economic activities and their (positive and negative) effects on the environment and the coastal population
ways in which coastal development can become more sustainable
The students should also be more familiar with sources of information
relevant to the coast and coastal management, including DLIST
Finally, the students are expected to apply the knowledge acquired in:
the analysis of one case study about coastal tourism
the analysis of two newspaper articles about a general
environmental topic (climate change) and a more specific one (coastal
development)
