MODULE CONTENT: ICZM strategies: coordinated retreat, adaptation (sustainability), protection. Ecological and sociological implications. Potential impacts by climate change and direct human interferences on coastal systems. Impact assessment: Scoping of habitats, focusing and validation of communities and species, identification and evaluation of impacts. Internal functioning of companies; company decision making; and influence of externally set conditions with emphasis on Namibian-based companies.
EXIT LEARNING OUTCOMES: On completion of this module you will appreciate the concept of ICZM for replacing the piecemeal management approaches in the coastal zone. You will learn the guiding principles of ICZM or ICM. You will be knowledgeable about the issues of Biodiversity and its Conservation. You will understand the concepts of Sustainable Development and tools to promote it. You will understand the potential impacts of Global Atmospheric Change on the coastal areas. You will appreciate the Anthropogenic Inferences in coastal areas. You will also understand the EIA process as accepted internationally and as conducted within the framework provided by the Namibian EIA policy.
MODULE REGUIREMENTS AND EXPECTATIONS: Learner centered teaching approach; using examples in explaining and expounding on various concepts and processes. Encouraging students to observe the 80% attendance; giving compulsory practicals and field visits followed by report writing, which form part of CA assessment; and discussing assignments in class and individual scores and giving model/expected answers. Encouraging independent reading and use of library.
