Avian Demography Unit, University of Cape Town |
Description:
The Avian Demography Unit (ADU) contributes to conservation biology by collecting, analysing and disseminating information on populations of wild animals, especially birds. It trains people, at all levels, from primary school learners to postdoctoral fellows in a variety of biological and quantitative skills. In addition, the ADU promotes environmental awareness through the participation of thousands of volunteers in its projects. The ADU was recognized as a formal research unit within the Department of Statistical Sciences of the University of Cape Town in 1991. Professor Les Underhill has been director since its inception. The ADU is a genuinely transdisciplinary group. The core disciplines are based on Statistics, Biology and Information Systems. Twelve students graduated with degrees by thesis in the five-year period 2002–2006, eight PhDs and four MScs, and the staff and students produce approximately 40 peer-reviewed papers annually. The Benguela Upwelling System is a key focus area for these activities. Postgraduate students and ADU staff have research projects on top predators with the Benguela, including Cape Fur Seals, African Penguins, Cape Gannets, Great White Pelicans, Damara Terns, Swift Terns, Kelp Gulls, Hartlaub's Gulls, and even African Black Oystercatchers.
