Philippines celebrates Month of the Ocean
May is Month of the Ocean in the Philippines. It started in 1999 through the Presidential Proclamation No. 57 of the then President Joseph Ejercito Estrada. The statute directed the Department of Environment and Natural Resources through the Protected Areas and Wildlife Bureau and the Department of Agriculture through the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources to spearhead the observance of the Month of the Ocean every month of May in collaboration with the different sectors of society and to conduct of activities that shall highlight the conservation, protection and sustainable management of Philippine coastal and ocean resources.
The theme for this year's celebration is “Buhay Dagat, Buhay Natin!”.
