Annex 13. Guidelines for preparation of national reports on biodiversity protection.

  1. Objective
  2. Main objective of national reports on biodiversity protection is description of existing situation relating to Caspian biodiversity, taking into account specific of a country. These national reports will serve as a basis for the Regional evaluation of the status of biodiversity protection in the Caspian region and will help in development of scientific justification for the Transboundary Diagnostic Analysis (TDA) as well as Strategic Action Program (SAP).

  3. Subject of the report
  4. The content and volume of a national report on biodiversity protection, discussed and supplemented at meeting of experts in Kazakhstan, are enclosed (Attachment 11). This document defines type of data and information to be reflected in national reports on biodiversity protection. This task is entirely based on existing data and does not require collection and analysis of new data. All important and lacking data and information should be taken under consideration in future reports. Geographical boundaries of described territory (within the marine environment, delta part and ecotopes of species, whose life cycles are connected with the sea). Time framework for the description of the status of biological diversity (70s-80s and more elaborated description of 90s).

  5. Structure
  6. It is planed, to publish every national report on biodiversity protection. Therefore, each report should be separately published document, but with assumption of its inclusion in the series of five reports.

  7. Software, fonts, formats and so on.
  8. Please use Microsoft Work version 6 or higher or Word Perfect version 6 or higher for Russian/Persian versions and English text. If possible use fonts Arial or Helvetica, size 11 or 12. Type of the whole document on A4 paper (210mm x 297mm), use common margins 2 sm for binding purposes (around 2 sm). Please, whenever possible, avoid use of references. Please prepare and attach hard copy and a copy on disk.

  9. Tables
  10. Each table, whenever possible, should be fit on one page. Tables should be numbered subsequently in the entire document with Arabic numbers (Table 1, Table 2, etc.) and should be a part of main body of a text. Neither text, nor numbering contained in illustrations should coincide with type of font or size, as was mentioned above for the text.

  11. Illustrations
  12. High quality of illustrations is required. Illustrations should be numbered subsequently in the whole document with Arabic numbers(Figure 1, Figure 2, etc). It is necessary to print them using graphic programs or they should be scanned and integrated in the text. Neither text, nor numbering contained in illustrations should coincide with type of font or size, contemplated for the main text.

  13. Maps
  14. Whenever possible, do not exceed A4 format of maps. If it is very needed, you can use A3 format (297mm x 420mm); then it should be wrapped up till A4 format in the document. Consider such maps as illustrations and number them in accordance with above mentioned order. Any other significant maps of any size, should be indicated in the text, but should not be numbered subsequently, but should be wrapped and put in the pocket attached to interior side of back front page.

  15. Lists, schedules and so on
  16. Long lists, tables, schedules should follow as attachments and be outside of the main text. Attachments have to be numbered with Arabic numbers (Attachment 1, Attachment 2, etc). They should be referred in course of discussions. For instance, list of species of Caspian Sea should follow as attachment.

  17. Bibliography
  18. Only publications relevant to the text should be indicated in alphabetic order, according to author’s surname. It is necessary to use typical, common method for the design of reference: author’s name, year of publication, name of work, name of magazine and details (for magazine’s articles).

  19. Acknowledgement
  20. In acknowledgement section, sufficient attention should be given to main composers of analysis and synthesis of data and information and other materials. Indicate name, institution and occupation of each listed person and topic or issue, which she/he touches. Expression of acknowledgement is not only recognition of individual’s contribution, but also assessment of his responsibility.

  21. Time-table
  22. First draft reports should be ready by 15th of December 1999, final hard and electronic (disk) copies of versions of National Reports on Biodiversity Protection in native and English languages should be finalized by 1st of March 2000 and submitted to CRTC on Biodiversity Protection and Mr. Mamaev Vladimir, consultants on biodiversity protection.
