About Department
The Department for Electoral Cooperation and Observation (DECO) is the entity within the Secretariat for Political Affairs (SPA) in charge of supporting electoral systems and institutions in the Americas as well as promoting democratic elections in the region.
Mission and functions
To strengthen democratic political and electoral systems as well as processes through the promotion of free and fair elections throughout the Americas.
Functions of the Department include:
Developing and maintaining a permanent and professional electoral observation service for the Member states.
Collaborating with Electoral Management Bodies (EMBs) of the Member states in the design and implementation of technical cooperation programs in electoral affairs.
Carrying out applied research activities as well as organizing fora and seminars to promote dialogue on how to continually improve electoral institutions and processes in the region.
