Our Center “Ecosphere” is a nongovernmental humanitarian organization, uniting environmental professionals, scientists, teachers and students, who have experience in the field of the education, health care, environmental and cultural protection. The main objective: to promote preservation, protection, rehabilitation of the environment and the young generation’s health, nature and culture heritage of Azerbaijan; propaganda of the principles of humanism, charity, compassion in various fields of life. Main fields of activity: environmental education and training, propaganda of the kind treatment of animals, social and domestic assistance, healthy lifestyle propaganda for the young generation, study of the development of interaction between the human being, human society and the surroundings (nature, culture, traditions), training of the young generation to love and respect their cultural and historical traditions, elaboration and implementation of the new methods of environmental training for kids, teenagers, students and adults. Implementation of ecology works, provision of environmental safety in current offshore and onshore operations, oil-contaminated soil remediation and production recycling, industrial waste utilization, monitoring of environmental impact of enterprises' activity, elimination of effects of anthropogenic, technogenic and natural disasters in compliance with the international environmental standards and operative rules in the SOCAR.

• SOCAR has developed and started implementing its Environmental Policy in order to systemize its work in ensuring environmental protection and environmental safety. • Stopping disposal of waste waters from oil refineries into Caspian and supplying branches with modern equipment to prevent oil spills. • Cleaning of Caspian Sea from sunken or semi‐sunken vessels, old scaffold bridges and other big size wastes. • Applying comprehensive monitoring system in installations located on Caspian Sea. • Treatment of oil-slime from the oil-slime pit on the Bibi-Heybat Field with the help of a treatment plant • Development of environmental awareness of young generation.

The aim of our organization is exposure and estimation of prerequisites of social economic development of the regions of Azerbaijan, as well as elaboration of programs on stimulation of the economy development on the local level. Khilly Sturgeon Hatchery put in commission in October 2003 with financial support of World Bank purposes artificial reproduction of Caspian sturgeon species. Since our first reproduction season of 2004 Khilly Sturgeon Hatchery released more than 40 mln. fingerlings of four different sturgeon species in Kura river estuary. Thereby our hatchery contributes significantly to maintain the population of sturgeon species and assure their sustainable use.

Since 2004, creation of mother fish stock for sturgeon species that include more than 4000 specimens of age and species. Introduction of Salmo Trutta Trutta farming as one of hibernal out season activity of hatchery

The AzerFRI renders wide spectrum of analytical services for research of aquatic bioresources and environmental conditions. Specialization of the AzerFRI embraces: • Assessment of stock and regulation of sturgeon fish industry; • Industrial ichthyology; • Reproduction of the fish stock; • Goods fish-breeding; • Assessment of fodder base (macrozoobenthos, plankton) and nourishment of fish (sturgeon, carp and herring); • Hydrochemical conditions of inhabitance of aquatic organisms; • Ecotoxicological testing of hydrobionts; • Participation in work of the Commission on the Aquatic Bioresources of the Caspian Sea in the framework of biodiversity conservation and recreation of industrial stock of sturgeon, kilka and other industrial hydrobionts of Caspian sea; • Environmental Baseline Assessments (EBAs); • Environmental Impact Assessments (EIAs); • Environmental Monitoring Studies. The AzerFRI renders the following services: • Assessment of fish stock damage; • Complex monitoring of the marine environment; • Research of abiotic (hydrological and hydro-chemical) parameters of environment, which defines formation of biological productivity of the sea; • Taxonomy analysis of ichthyofauna, benthos macrofauna, phyto- and zooplankton; • Microorganisms taxonomy analysis and biological decomposition research; • Mnemiopsis population monitoring in the Middle and Southern Caspian, assessment of its influence on marine biota; • Ecological assessment of biota communities, ecosystem analysis; • Biotesting of industrial chemical reagents on water organisms; • Pathomorphological and ecotoxicological testing of animal tissues; • Assessment of efficacy of natural spawning and size of possible industrial return of sturgeon of the rivers Kura and Araz; • Giving review information about the condition of biological objects and about all other ecological parameters of Caspian sea; • Provision of the vessel for marine monitoring; The following types of analytical research are conducted by the AzerFRI: • Assessment of distribution, quantity, qualitative compound of population and determination of Optimally Allowable Catch (OAC) of sturgeon fish, analysis of kilka industry in the framework of intergovernmental program of the Caspian littoral countries; • Biotechnological improvement of artificial breeding of sturgeon fish and Kura salmon applicable for changeable environmental conditions; • Analysis of hydro-chemical parameters; • Identification of specific and quantitative composition of ichthyofauna, macrozoobenthos, phytoplankton, zooplankton, periphyton, coastal vegetation, microorganisms, colifom index; • Ecotoxicological research of Caspian objects (fish, invertebrates and phytoplankton); • Pathomorphological and physiological studies of organism conditions (fish, seals).

- Research organization. - The AzerFRI enlists to peer review of marine bioresources damage on projects of EIAs prospecting and working out of oil-and-gas field of Caspian sea in the framework of Azerbaijan International Operational Company (AIOC, bp). - AzerFRI participates in strategic and regional programs of international organizations (EU, TACIS, CEP-UNDP, FAO, Commission on the Aquatic Bioresources of the Caspian Sea), embracing aspects of technical collaboration, management, protection and sustainable development of (sturgeon) fisheries, biodiversity conservation of Caspian Sea and protection its ecosystem from invasive species. - The AzerFRI offers ecological service on commercial basis for foreign oil companies working in Azerbaijan on EBAs and EIAs projects and various oil-and-gas field monitoring carried out in compliance with international requirements.
