Topography

The topography of the Mekong basin comprises a wide range of features. They include the deeply incised mountain ranges within the upper reaches of the Mekong River, extensive plateau areas along the middle reaches, and the vast expanse of flood plains along its lower reaches.

Producing accurate topographic maps of the Mekong basin has posed a challenge to cartographers in the past.

Recently, the Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM) has yielded the most detailed and consistent topographic map of the basin to-date using a very precise terrain detection method.
