Who is the Assistant Secretary General of the OAS, and how is the Assistant Secretary General elected?

Albert R. Ramdin, a diplomat of Suriname, is the Assistant Secretary General of the OAS. He was elected OAS Assistant Secretary General on June 7, 2005, and took office on July 19.

The Assistant Secretary General is elected by the General Assembly for a five ¬year term and may not be reelected more than once or succeeded by a person of the same nationality. In the event that the office of Assistant Secretary General becomes vacant, the Permanent Council shall elect a substitute to hold that office until the General Assembly elects a new Assistant Secretary General for a full term.
