Ports are vital to nearly all of the economies of the Western Hemisphere. Without them exports and imports would fall dramatically, which is why it is critical to keep these lifelines not just operational in the most technically basic sense, but to work to improve them as new technologies become available so as to allow these economic arteries to flourish. This job of monitoring and assisting in the up-keep of the Hemisphere’s ports falls under the Inter-American Committee on Ports. The stated objective of this committee is “to serve as a permanent Inter-American forum of the Member States of the Organization, for the strengthening of hemispheric cooperation in the area of port sector development, with the active cooperation and collaboration of the private sector.”
