The importance of documentaries
By Maria Terezinha Vaz, Producer

Documentaries are a growing form of communication that provides the kind of news and information that the main stream news and the media moguls have been hiding. In a time when 70% of all media worldwide is controlled by eight companies, the importance of independent documentaries is all the more evident in helping to educate people and promote much needed changes in our societies.

In 2004, when I proposed the project “A Convenient Truth,” cities like Santa Cruz and California did not collect plastic bags or styrofoam. I documented the successful recycling achievements of Curitiba, Brazil. One year later, local newspapers announced that Santa Cruz would start to collect them.

We cannot depend on our traditional and dominant media to give us news about what can be and is being achieved in our world. We must have access to independent forms of media such as documentaries for that.

About the documentary “A Convenient Truth:
Urban Solutions from Curitiba, Brazil”: Informative, inspirational documentary aimed at sharing ideas to provoke environment-friendly and cost-effective changes in cities worldwide. The documentary focuses on innovations in transportation, recycling, social benefits including affordable housing, seasonal parks, and the processes that transformed Curitiba into one of the most livable cities in the world.
