An overabundance of agricultural fertilizer flushed into the river, causes a massive algal bloom over the mudflats. The algal cover displaces a large number of water birds that can no longer forage on these mudflats, one of the most productive habitats of the estuary. It also creates an anoxic layer that kills many estuarine invertebrates.
