Ecosystem-Based Management

Towards Ecosystem-Based Management of the Guinea Current Large Marine Ecosystem

The approach to ecosystem-based assessment and management of marine goods and services was introduced to Africa during the Global Environment Facility-United Nations Development Programme-United Nations Industrial Development Organization Gulf of Guinea project from 1995 to June 1999. With financial assistance from the Global Environment Facility (GEF), ministers responsible for the environment and marine resources, from six Gulf of Guinea countries—Benin, Cameroon, Ghana, Cote d'Ivoire, Nigeria, and Togo—committed their national resources in marine scientists, technicians, facilities, and in-kind services to conduct transboundary assessments of marine resources and support actions for resource recovery and sustainability.

Economic Activities in LMEs

Accounting for Economic Activities in Large Marine Ecosystems and Regional Seas

This report has been commissioned within the framework of the RS/LME partnership, which was developed to link the coastal and marine activities of the global Regional Seas Programmes (RS) coordinated by UNEP with the Large Marine Ecosystem (LME) approach.

Governance and Socioeconomics Handbook

A Handbook on Governance and Socioeconomics of Large Marine Ecosystems

The primary purpose of this Handbook is to serve as a practical guide to innovators of governance and socioeconomics in Large Marine Ecosystem (LME) projects. Based on a Global Environmental Facility IW:LEARN-sponsored workshop for 11 LME programs,1 the Handbook is designed to be used in short courses and workshops on governance and socioeconomics science to support the ecosystem approach to marine resources management.

The UNEP Large Marine Ecosystem Report

A Perspective on Changing Conditions in LMEs of the World's Regional Seas

The world's coastal ocean waters continue to be degraded by unsustainable fishing practices, habitat degradation, eutrophication, toxic pollution, aerosol contamination, and emerging diseases. Against this background is a growing recognition among world leaders that positive actions are required on the part of governments and civil society to redress global environmental and resource degradation with actions to recover depleted fish populations, restore degraded habitats and reduce coastal pollution.
