Renewable energy lessons shared at Pacific meeting

[PIGGAREP]Representatives from the Forum Small Island States have come together in Port Vila, Vanuatu, to share their experiences in the area of renewable energy.

“This workshop reflects the Melanesian Spirit, which is what the Pacific Way is all about”, said Hon. Maxime Carlot Korman, Minister of Lands and Natural Resources of Vanuatu, during his opening statement to the workshop on Monday morning.

The workshop is coordinated by the Samoa-based Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP) through its Pacific Islands Greenhouse Gas Abatement through Renewable Energy Project (PIGGAREP), which is funded by the Global Environment Facility (GEF) and implemented by the United Nations Development Programme.

“PIGGAREP is about removing barriers to the widespread use of renewable energy in the Pacific region. Lack of awareness is a key barrier and we are addressing this in this workshop by sharing experiences about what works and what does not work on the ground,” said Solomone Fifita, the manager of the PIGGAREP.

Renewable Energy in Nauru

File[PIGGAREP]Nauru will be working towards stronger renewable energy possibilities with the Pacific Islands Greenhouse Gas Abatement through Renewable Energy Project (PIGGAREP). Collectively, through PIGGAREP, the Pacific region is working towards reducing regional fossil fuel emissions by 33% by 2015. PIGGAREP will help Pacific Island Countries to address the barriers to their renewable energy development.

The Global Environment Facility (GEF), through the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Samoa Multi-Country Office, funds the project with the Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP) as its implementing agency.

PIGGAREP will be assisting Nauru with several renewable energy projects. A current parallel project funded by the European Union is providing grid-connected solar power to a Nauru school and the airport terminal. PIGGAREP will support this project by promoting public awareness of renewable energy as well as working towards having renewable energy courses become part of the school curriculum. At the same time, PIGGAREP will assist Nauru to extend its focus on renewable energy from solar to include wind. There is currently an AusAID-funded project in Nauru utilising both solar and wind for mobile phones and wireless Internet signals.

Renewable Energy for the Pacific

PIGGAREP_Group_Pic[PIGGAREP]11 countries in the Pacific region will be working towards reducing their emissions of greenhouse gasses with a project that encourages the use of renewable energy. Pacific islands are most vulnerable to climate change, with several of the most substantial impacts being loss of coastal infrastructure and land, more intense cyclones and droughts and failure of subsistence crops and fisheries.

Greenhouse gasses contribute to climate change and burning fossil fuels produces carbon dioxide, one of the greenhouse gasses. Carbon Dioxide accounts for about 75% of all greenhouse gasses throughout the world. One way to reduce the growth rate of the greenhouse gasses is through renewable energy technologies, which is what the Pacific Islands Greenhouse Gas Abatement through Renewable Energy project (PIGGAREP), is about.

PIGGAREP began its weeklong inception workshop today. The Global Environment Facility (GEF) through the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Samoa Multi-Country Office funds the project and the Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP) is its implementing agency.
