The 6th Study Conference on BALTEX will reflect the interdisciplinary nature of the BALTEX programme. Conference topics are aligned along the revised BALTEX Phase II objectives:

Improved understanding of energy and water cycles under changing conditions. This involves the development and assessment of regional models, and the improvement of observations.

Analysis of past climate variability and change, and provision of regional climate projections over the Baltic Sea basin for the 21st century. This involves detection and attribution studies as well as assessments of past, current and future climate change including its impacts on the environment.

Provision of improved tools for water management, with an emphasis on extreme hydrological events and long-term changes. This includes the assessment of water resources in today’s and future climate, as well as forcasting extreme events and their impacts on the environment and infrastructure.

Biogeochemical cycles in the Baltic Sea basin and transport processes within the regional Earth system under anthropogenic influence. This involves the coupling of regional climate models with biogeochemical models to estimate the impact of climate change on matter fluxes.


Results related to any of the above themes are welcome, as well as contributions from other related programmes. The Conference is also envisaged as a communication platform for the research community, water resource managers and other stakeholders.

Invited and contributed papers will be presented in plenary along with parallel poster sessions.

As you may know, the ICSU General Assembly decided in October 2008, that there was a need to outline options for an overall framework for global environmental change research and its policy relevance. Under the leadership of ICSU’s Committee on Scientific Planning and Review, a three-step Earth System visioning process has been launched.

The first step in the process is a web-based consultation at http://visioning.icsu.org which poses the questions: “What is the most important research question in Earth system research that needs answering in the next decade? Why?” On the website, which will be active until 15 August, not only can you post research questions, but also indicate how you view the contributions from others, by voting on questions and posting comments. By registering on the website you will be able to receive updates on the progress and results of the Earth system visioning process over the next 18 months.

We hope to see a lively exchange of ideas and participation from across the Earth system community. I encourage you to distribute this request for participation among your networks of colleagues and friends, and look forward to your input.

PhD Programme on Science and Management of Climate Change

In 2007, the Department of Economics and the Department of Environmental Sciences of the Ca' Foscari University of Venice, in collaboration with the Euro-Mediterranean Centre for Climate Change (CMCC) established a 3-year PhD Programme in Science and Management of Climate Change. The PhD Programme is aimed at providing the job market with experts with a broad, in-depth, scientific and socio-economic background, as well as with a sound and innovative research experience focusing on the dynamics of climate change and on the methodologies and techniques for their evaluation and management.
The PhD Programme is organised in two streams:
- Dynamic Climatology at CMCC in Bologna
- Climate change impact and management, at the Department of Economics of the Ca' Foscari University in Venice
For the academic year 2009/2010 (25th cycle of Italian PhD Programmes) the Euro-Mediterranean Centre for Climate Change offers three studentships, others may be provided by other institutions or research projects.
The Call for Applications will be opened around the 15th of May and the deadline will be set at mid June.
In order to apply, students are required to hold an Italian “laurea magistrale” or a university degree equivalent of a MSc. Foreign applicants shall provide full documentation of their university studies, including course profiles. Knowledge of the English language is a necessary prerequisite, since all the courses will be given in English. Applicants will be required to submit a research proposal, together with the CV and any other relevant relevant documents, including university certificates, academic transcript of courses, certificate of English language proficiency, publications, presentation/reference letters.
An interview, which may be held telephonically or via internet, may be organised for those candidates whose research projects the commission intends to consider.
