PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Global NEWS is an international, interdisciplinary scientific taskforce, focused on understanding the relationship between human activity and coastal nutrient enrichment. Global NEWS was formed in spring of 2002 as a workgroup of UNESCOs Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC).

Dr. Sybil Seitzinger of Rutgers Universitys Institute of Coastal and Marine Sciences is the chair of this workgroup.

The primary aim of Global NEWS is to construct and apply the next generation of spatially explicit, global nutrient export models, linking the resulting river loads to quantitative assessments of coastal ecosystem health. The first set of global river export models was published in late 2005 in a special collection of Global Biogeochemical Cycles (vol. 19, no. 4).

Please refer to these articles, available on the Global NEWS web site, for more details about the models and associated results.

THE PROJECT RELATES TO THE FOLLOWING PRIORITY TOPICS AND SCIENTIFIC THEMES

Priority Topics:

1 - Link social and ecological systems in the coastal zone

2 - Assess and predict impact of environmental change on coastal ecosystems

Scientific Themes:

2 - Implications of Global Change for Coastal Ecosystems and Sustainable Development

3 - Human Influences on River Basin-Coastal Zone Interactions

4 - Biogeochemical Cycles in Coastal and Shelf Waters

5 - Towards Coastal System Sustainability by Managing Land-Ocean Interactions
