Site-Specific Surveys : 
 
In 2002, biological, resource and socio-economic surveys were carried out at the proposed MPA sites at Dungonab Bay and Mukawwar Island (Sudan), Isles des Sept Frères and Ras Siyyan (Djibouti) and Belhaf–Bir Ali (Yemen). In May 2003 a survey was carried out at Sanganeb Atoll (Sudan). Prior to the execution of the surveys the necessary equipment (diving kits, air compressor, generator and camping materials) was procured and forwarded to the relevant authority in each country. In each case survey work was led by the national authorities. The objectives of the surveys were to identify and map the distribution and diversity of marine and coastal habitats, to establish the current status of resources such as fish and benthic communities, and to assess the levels and types of human impacts within the proposed MPAs. All field survey data were entered into PERSGA's Integrated Information Management System and used to create point maps illustrating the distribution and status of resources. The surveys included the use of remote sensing data from the Landsat 7 Enhanced Thematic Mapper satellite to map the broad distribution of habitats and biotopes throughout the survey areas.
 
 
National MPA Master Plans:
 
Based on the results of site-specific surveys, a set of site-specific Master Plans with management guidelines were prepared for each of the four proposed MPAs.
