Water and Climate Change: How to develop an adaptation strategy in transboundary basins

May 10-12, 2010

Location: Geneva, Switzerland

A workshop on water and adaptation to climate change in transboundary basins will be held on 10-11 May 2010 in Geneva under the UNECE Convention on the Protection and Use of Transboundary Watercourses and International Lakes (Water Convention), back-to-back with the third meeting of the UNECE Task Force on Water and Climate (12 May).

The workshop aims to promote exchange of experience with adaptation of water management to climate change, especially in transboundary basins, to show how cooperation can be established in every step of developing an adaptation strategy, to support countries developing such strategies and to promote implementation of the UNECE Guidance on Water and Adaptation to Climate Change. Read more here.

After having adopted the guidance at its fifth session in November 2009 in Geneva, the Meeting of the Parties to the Water Convention decided to foster its implementation through a programme of pilot projects and a platform for exchanging experience with adaptation in the transboundary context. The workshop and task force meeting are important steps in this process; the pilot projects programme and design of the platform will, among other issues, be discussed.

The working languages will be English, French and Russian.  All relevant documents are/will be made available here (workshop) and here (task force meeting).

Proposals for presentations at the workshop relevant to the topics and sessions as described in the information notice can be submitted by April 6 to sonja.koeppel@unece.org.
