Third Mayors’ Round-Table and Third Regional Scientific Conference of the UNEP/GEF Project Entitled “Reversing Environmental Degradation Trends in the South China Sea and Gulf of Thailand”The Third Mayors’ Round-Table and Third Regional Scientific Conference of the UNEP/GEF South China Sea Project were convened in Bangkok, Thailand from 26-30th November 2007. The two events were aimed at providing members of the South China Sea project network an opportunity to collegially review and assess the project’s overall progress, accomplishments and output to date; and to share their respective implementation experiences, concerns and issues. An NGO Forum was also convened in conjunction with Mayors’ Round-Table meeting in order to explore the potential involvement of the GEF Small Grants Programme in the implementation of the regional Strategic Action Programme for the South China Sea. The meetings benefited greatly from the participation of the Deputy Executive Director of the United Nations Environment Programme, Dr. Shafqat Kakakhel, and the Senior International Waters Specialist of the GEF Secretariat, Dr. Alfred Duda. UNEP/GEF South China Sea Project and GEF Small Grants Programme Partnership The UNEP/GEF South China Sea Project and the GEF Small Grants Programme launched a partnership to promote community involvement in support of the implementation of the Regional Strategic Action Programme (SAP) for the South China Sea during the closing session of the 3rd Regional Scientific Conference. The partnership is aimed at building the capacity of NGOs, community-based organisations, and coastal communities to implement the SAP at the local level. It is anticipated that this will assist in facilitating the effective exchange of information between local, national and regional levels. ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS The Project Co-ordinating Unit extends a sincere thank you to all participants for their excellent contributions to these two events. A special thank you is extended to the Southeast Asian Fisheries Development Center SEAFDEC for their support in producing the video highlights of the Mayors’ Round-Table and Regional Scientific Conference. SEAFDEC’s audio-visual unit contains a wealth of expertise and experience in the production of multi-media materials for meetings and conferences and is highly capable of providing similar support to the project’s suite of habitat demonstration sites and other International Waters projects.
