7th Meeting of the RWG-Mangroves

Seventh Meeting of the Regional Working Group on MangrovesThe Seventh Meeting of the Regional Working Group on Mangroves was successfully convened in Pontianak, West Kalimantan Province, Indonesia from 4th – 8th September 2006. The meeting was attended by mangrove component focal points from all participating countries, except the Philippines, 2 of 3 regional experts on mangroves, and 11 local government officials and other observers from West Kalimantan Province, Indonesia. The Seventh Meeting of the Regional Working Group on Mangroves agreed on:

  • A schedule for the completion and publication of national reports on mangroves in both national and English language,
  • A schedule for the completion and formal adoption of National Action Plans on Mangroves,
  • Future actions to improve oversight and guidance to the operation of the South China Sea Project’s mangrove demonstration sites,
  • Mangrove component inputs to the Regional Strategic Action Programme,
  • A schedule for the update of the regional South China Sea Meta-Database and GIS,
  • Mangrove component inputs to the South China Sea Regional Training Course on Mechanisms for Sustainable Production/Use of Mangroves and other Wetlands, and
  • A work plan and schedule of activities for the Regional Working Group on Mangroves during the period 2006-2008.

During the meeting the Project Director, Dr. John C. Pernetta, and Mr. Nyoto Santoso, Indonesian Focal Point for Mangroves and Director of the Indonesian Institute of Mangrove Research and Development, co-signed the addendum to the Memorandum of Understanding covering the operational plan for activities at the Batu Ampar Mangrove Demonstration Site in Indonesia on 4th September 2006. Participants visited the Batu Ampar mangrove demonstration site on the final day of the meeting. During this site visit the group observed:

  • 3, 5 and 8 year plantations of Rhizophora apiculata,
  • a production area based on the maintenance of 40 “seed” trees per hectare of area cut,
  • charcoal kilns operated by the Koperari Panter (community co-operative),
  • the differences in regrowth between natural and replanted mangrove areas, and
  • community trials for the production of soft shelled mud crabs.

The Eighth Meeting of the Regional Working Group on Mangroves will be convened at the Peam Krasop Mangrove/Wetland Habitat Demonstration Site in Kok Kong Province, Cambodia from 19th-22nd April, 2007.
